Upon a time once there was a boy in New York who wanted to write a book. So he
went to the University of Missouri to learn how to write. But then he needed
things to write about. So he started to travel. He journeyed all over the
Americas and then up to the North Pole and down to the Sahara Desert and across
the Amazon jungle. He was having such a fun time that he forgot to write. The
years passed. He met a beautiful girl and they got married. He needed to work to
take care of the beautiful girl. There was no longer time to write a book. Then
he started to have children. He needed to work harder. He moved his family to
Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and worked and worked and worked. He thought he
would never be able to write a book. And then his children showed him how.

Once upon the same time there was a girl who wanted to draw a book.
She went to Yale University to learn how to paint and draw and make
prints. She met Professor Reed, who made her paint 50 paintings
in one weekend, but that was not a book. She needed things to draw
about. So she started to travel. She got on a bicycle and pedaled
across the United States and into Canada. She explored Japan and
learned to hold new brushes. She journeyed to Italy and taught art
to children. She went to Greece and Turkey and came home sunburned.
Sketchbooks grew in a huge pile under her bed, but she still did
not have a book. Then the phone rang. It was Cal. He needed someone
to draw a story his kids had taught him how to write. So she sat
down and drew a book.
